How to Download a Zoom Recording (Cloud, Local, and Shared Links)
Zoom stores your recordings in one of two places, and where it saved yours decides how you download it. A cloud recording lives in Zoom's web portal and downloads as a file (or a share link). A local recording was saved straight to your computer and is already sitting in a folder — you just have to find it.
This guide covers both, plus how to save a recording someone shared with you, where the files hide on a Mac or PC, and what to do when the download button won't cooperate.
First: where did Zoom save the recording?
You can only download what Zoom actually saved, so start here.
| If you… | Zoom saved it as | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| Clicked Record to the Cloud (paid plans) | Cloud recording | Zoom web portal → Recordings |
| Clicked Record on this Computer | Local recording | A Zoom folder on your computer |
| Were sent a recording link by the host | Cloud recording (theirs) | The share page — download if they allowed it |
| Recorded on the free plan | Local only | Free accounts can't record to the cloud |
If you're not sure which button was pressed, check the web portal first — if it's not there, it was local.
How to download a Zoom cloud recording
Cloud recordings live in Zoom's web portal, not the desktop app.
- Sign in at zoom.us in a browser (not the Zoom app).
- In the left menu, click Recordings → Cloud Recordings.
- Click the meeting topic to open its recording page.
- Hover over the file you want and click the download icon, or click Download to grab every file (video, audio-only
.m4a, chat, and the.vtttranscript) at once.
The video saves as an .mp4. If a download quietly fails, check that your browser isn't blocking multiple simultaneous downloads — Zoom triggers one per file.
How to find Zoom recordings you can't see
If Cloud Recordings is empty when you expect files there:
- Wrong account. Recordings belong to the host's account. If you have several Zoom logins, sign in with the one that hosted the call.
- Still processing. Zoom renders the recording after the meeting; long calls can take a while, and you get an email when it's ready.
- Auto-deleted. Check Recordings → Trash (recordings sit there ~30 days) and your account's auto-delete policy.
- It was local. If it was never in the cloud, skip to local recordings below.
How to download a Zoom recording from a shared link
If the host sent you a link instead of the file, you're looking at their cloud recording. Whether you can download it is entirely the host's choice.
- Open the share link in a browser.
- If the host enabled downloads, a Download button sits below or beside the video — click it to save the
.mp4. - If there's a password field, use the passcode the host sent with the link.
No download button? The host turned downloads off for that recording. You can't force it from your side — ask them to enable "Viewers can download" on the recording's settings, or to send you the file directly. Screen-capturing the playback is the fallback, but it re-records the audio and video at lower quality and still needs everyone's consent.
Where local Zoom recordings are saved
A local recording never touches the cloud — it's a file on the computer that did the recording. Zoom converts it to .mp4 after the meeting ends, so if you closed your laptop mid-conversion, reopen Zoom and let it finish.
Default locations:
- Mac:
~/Documents/Zoom— each meeting gets its own dated subfolder. - Windows:
C:\Users\[you]\Documents\Zoom— same dated subfolders.
Inside each folder you'll find the video (.mp4), an audio-only file (.m4a), and the chat log. In the Zoom desktop app you can also go to Settings → Recording → Local Recording and click Open next to the storage location to jump straight there, or use Meetings → Recorded to see local recordings and hit Open on any of them.
If the folder is missing, the recording either failed to convert (reopen Zoom) or was saved to a custom path you set in Settings → Recording.
Downloading only the audio (or the transcript)
You don't always want a two-gigabyte video.
- Audio only: every recording — cloud or local — includes an
.m4aaudio file next to the.mp4. Download that alone when you just need the sound. - Transcript: cloud recordings with Audio transcript enabled include a
.vttfile you can download the same way. If you only ever wanted the text of the call, downloading the whole video is the long way around — see how to get a Zoom transcript for faster routes, including ones that skip the recording entirely.
Troubleshooting downloads
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No recording in the web portal | You recorded locally, or you're in the wrong account | Check ~/Documents/Zoom; sign in as the host |
| Download button is missing on a share link | Host disabled downloads | Ask the host to allow downloads or send the file |
| Recording is stuck "processing" | Cloud render still running | Wait — you'll get an email when it's ready |
Local file is a .zoom file, not .mp4 |
Conversion was interrupted | Reopen Zoom, or double-click the file to convert it |
| Recording vanished | Auto-delete policy | Check Recordings → Trash in the web portal |
| Can't download someone else's recording | You're not the host and downloads are off | Only the host controls download permissions |
Can't download it? You may not need the recording at all
Half the time the recording is a heavy way to get something small: what was said, what was decided, and what you agreed to do. If that's what you're after, you don't need a paid cloud plan, host access, or a multi-gigabyte .mp4.
Nod captures your Mac's own audio during any Zoom call — no bot joins the meeting, and you don't have to be the host — then gives you a clean transcript and a structured summary. The audio is discarded once the text comes back; nothing is stored as a recording. You keep the part you actually reread, without a file to download or manage. It works the same on Google Meet, Teams, and phone calls. See Zoom notes without a bot for how that works.
One caveat before you download or record
Having a recording doesn't settle whether you were allowed to make it. Depending on where you and the other participants are, recording or downloading a call may require everyone's consent — and in some places that's a legal matter, not an etiquette one. Read meeting recording consent laws before you make downloading calls a habit.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I download a Zoom recording?
- For a cloud recording, sign in at zoom.us in a browser, go to Recordings → Cloud Recordings, open the meeting, and click the download icon (or Download to get every file). For a local recording, the file is already on the computer that recorded it — on a Mac it's in ~/Documents/Zoom, on Windows in C:\Users[you]\Documents\Zoom.
- Where does Zoom save recordings?
- Cloud recordings live in the Zoom web portal under Recordings → Cloud Recordings. Local recordings are saved to the computer that recorded the meeting: ~/Documents/Zoom on Mac and C:\Users[you]\Documents\Zoom on Windows, each in a dated subfolder with the video, an audio-only file, and the chat log.
- How do I download a Zoom recording from a shared link?
- Open the link in a browser and, if the host enabled downloads, click the Download button beside the video (enter the passcode if prompted). If there's no download button, the host turned downloads off — you can't force it, so ask them to allow downloads or send you the file.
- Can I download a Zoom recording if I'm not the host?
- Only if the host allows it. Cloud recordings belong to the host's account, and they control whether viewers can download. If you were sent a share link with downloads enabled you can save it; otherwise ask the host. To keep your own record of a call without depending on the host, capture the audio on your own Mac instead.
- Why can't I download my Zoom recording?
- The most common reasons are: you recorded locally so it's not in the web portal (check ~/Documents/Zoom), you're signed into the wrong Zoom account, the cloud recording is still processing, or it was removed by an auto-delete policy (check Recordings → Trash). On a shared recording, a missing download button means the host disabled downloads.
- How do I download just the audio from a Zoom recording?
- Every Zoom recording includes an audio-only .m4a file alongside the .mp4 video. In the web portal's Cloud Recordings, download the audio file on its own; for a local recording, the .m4a sits in the same ~/Documents/Zoom subfolder as the video.
