How to Transcribe Google Meet for Free

By , founder of Nod · Updated September 29, 2026

You can try Google Meet transcription with Nod on Mac for 14 days, including 5 meeting hours, without a credit card. This is a trial, not a permanent free plan. If you need ongoing free transcription, compare tools with a recurring free allowance and check their limits before using them for work.

Which option fits your meeting?

  • Native Google Meet transcription: included in eligible paid Google plans. Check Google's eligibility and permissions guide. It is not a free standalone transcript service for every account.
  • Caption-based extensions: may offer a free allowance in a supported browser. Check export limits, supported languages, and whether the extension reads captions or captures audio. A tab extension alone does not cover a separate desktop calling app.
  • Meeting assistants with free plans: compare monthly allowances, per-meeting limits, bot visibility, audio retention, and model-training terms. These vary by provider; free does not automatically mean that data is used for training.
  • Nod's Mac trial: captures microphone and system audio without joining the call, sends short segments for hosted transcription, and keeps text rather than a playback recording. See the Mac comparison for alternatives.

Google Meet's transcription and video recording are independent features. You do not need to make a video recording to use its native transcript.

Transcription without the Workspace tier

Nod transcribes from your Mac's own audio, so the transcript doesn't depend on which Google plan the account is on.

What Nod's trial includes

You can capture calls, review transcripts and summaries, and ask questions about captured conversations within the trial allowance. After the trial, Starter costs $15 per month on monthly billing or $12 per month billed annually ($144 per year). See current pricing for all plans and allowances.

Nod does not require a paid Google Workspace plan, but it requires a Mac and an internet connection. Local capture is not offline transcription: audio segments go to hosted providers. Nod stores transcripts and summaries in the EU and creates no recording for playback. The security policy explains provider processing and fallback retention.

How to try it on Google Meet

  1. Download Nod for Mac and start the trial.
  2. Grant microphone and system-audio permissions. Ambient screen context is separate and optional.
  3. Tell participants you will be taking AI notes and follow the rules for your meeting.
  4. Join Meet in your browser, then start capture in Nod.
  5. Check that both sides appear in the live transcript.
  6. Stop capture and review the transcript and summary before sharing any decisions or next steps.

For troubleshooting and the native Google option, use the Google Meet transcription without recording guide. For another calling app, see Teams notes without a bot.

Will Meet show a notice?

Nod does not join the meeting or activate Meet's native recording and transcription, so it does not trigger those notices. Features started by the organizer can still show their own indicators. Inform participants yourself and follow the consent guidance and organizational policy.

Before choosing a free tool

Test a short call first. Check transcription quality in your language, whether the allowance covers your meeting length, and what happens when the allowance ends. Also check where text and audio are processed and whether your organization permits the service.

Try Nod's free trial if a Mac app with no bot and no retained playback recording fits your workflow. Choose a permanent free plan elsewhere if ongoing free use is your requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Meet transcription free?
Native transcripts are included in eligible paid Google plans. Nod offers a 14-day trial with 5 meeting hours and no credit card; it is not a permanent free plan. Check the linked Google eligibility guide and Nod pricing for current limits.
What's the catch with free Google Meet transcription tools?
Check whether free means a permanent allowance or a trial, which meeting apps are supported, and how audio is processed and retained. Nod captures on your Mac but uses hosted transcription; no-training and provider-retention details are in the security policy.
Can I transcribe Google Meet for free without a bot?
Yes. A system-audio Mac app captures the sound your computer is already playing and transcribes it without joining the call, so no participant appears in the people panel. Nod includes this in its 14-day trial with 5 meeting hours, whether Meet is in a Chrome tab, a separate window, or another browser.
Do I need to turn on Google Meet's transcription to use Nod?
No. Nod doesn't use Meet's native transcription or recording — it captures your Mac's system audio separately. You don't need to be the host, you don't need a paid Workspace tier, and Meet's 'transcription on' banner is never triggered by Nod.
Is the free transcript accurate across languages?
Nod transcribes the real call audio rather than reading Meet's on-screen captions, and supports 35 languages. Because it captures system audio at the OS level, it isn't limited to a single browser tab the way caption-reading extensions are.

Useful on day one. Hard to work without by month three.

Start free on macOS, no card. Every conversation you capture today is one you can still ask about a year from now.
