Google Meet Transcription Without Recording or a Bot

By , founder of Nod · Updated September 29, 2026

Yes, you can get a Google Meet transcript without making a video recording. Google Meet's native transcription and recording are separate features. On a Mac, Nod provides another option: capture the call without adding a bot, send short audio segments for hosted transcription, and keep the text rather than an audio recording.

The right choice depends on your Google plan, your meeting permissions, and where you want your notes afterward.

Native Google Meet transcript or a separate Mac app?

Google documents transcription separately from recording. You do not need to turn on video recording to use native transcription. Check Google's eligibility and permissions guide for your account: the feature is included in eligible paid plans, and who can start it depends on host management. Participants see a transcription indicator.

Use the native transcript if your account supports it and you want the result in the organizer's Google Drive. Use Nod on Mac if you want a separate transcript and summary across Meet, Zoom, and Teams without an extra participant. Nod does not require Meet's transcription permission, but you still need permission to capture the conversation under your organization's rules.

Nod offers a 14-day trial with 5 meeting hours and no credit card, followed by paid plans. It is not a permanent free tier. See pricing, or compare free Google Meet transcription options.

A transcript with no recording behind it

The audio is transcribed and dropped — there's no file left in Drive for anyone to find later.

How does Nod transcribe without recording?

Nod captures microphone and system audio on your Mac. It sends short segments to hosted transcription, then releases the audio when the text returns. Nod creates no audio file for later playback; the transcript and summary are stored in the EU.

Local capture does not mean offline processing. The security policy explains hosted inference, provider locations, no-training terms, and fallback retention. This is the same capture path used for Teams notes without a bot.

Step by step: setting it up on your Mac

  1. Install Nod from the Mac download page.
  2. Grant microphone and system-audio permissions when macOS asks. Capturing meeting audio does not require you to enable ambient screen context. That is a separate, optional feature; see screen access.
  3. Tell participants you will be taking AI notes and follow the consent and organizational requirements for the meeting. Nod's reminder does not replace this step.
  4. Join Google Meet in your browser. Leave Meet's recording off if you do not want a video recording.
  5. Start capture in Nod. Check that the live transcript includes both your voice and the other participants before relying on it.
  6. Stop capture and review the transcript and summary. Check names, decisions, and deadlines against the source text before sharing them.

What the resulting notes look like

Here is an illustrative example, not a customer transcript or a guarantee of exact output:

Decision: Run the pilot with the support team first.

Next step: Alex will send the draft checklist on Friday.

Open question: Who will review the pilot results?

Nod keeps the conversation text alongside its summary. A person or deadline in the summary is text to verify, not an automatically assigned task. You can ask a follow-up about the meeting or use Ask Nod across captured conversations.

If the transcript misses someone

If only your voice appears, check the macOS system-audio permission and confirm that you can hear the meeting through your Mac. If only the other participants appear, check microphone access and the selected input. Run a short test after changing your audio device or permissions. Hosted transcription also needs a working internet connection.

If you need a transcript from an earlier meeting that Nod did not capture, ask the organizer for the native transcript. Nod cannot reconstruct an uncaptured call.

Does Google Meet notify participants?

Native Meet transcription shows a transcription indicator, even without video recording. Nod does not start Meet's recording or transcription and does not add a participant, so it does not trigger those native notices. Other features enabled by the organizer can still show their own notices.

Inform participants yourself and follow the consent guidance and your organization's policy. The absence of a saved audio file is not permission to capture a conversation.

Try it on your next Meet call

Frequently asked questions

Can you transcribe a Google Meet without recording it?
Yes. On eligible Google plans, native transcription can run independently of video recording. Nod offers a separate Mac workflow: it sends short audio segments to hosted transcription, saves text, and creates no audio recording for playback.
Does Google Meet transcription require video recording?
No. Google Meet transcription and video recording are separate features. Native transcription still requires an eligible plan and permission to start it, and participants see a transcription indicator.
Does Google Meet show a banner if I transcribe without recording?
Meet's 'recording started' and 'transcription on' banners fire only for Meet's native features. Nod captures system audio separately and saves no recording, so it triggers no Meet banner — and because it never joins the call, there's no third-party recording notice either.
Is transcribing without a recording still subject to consent laws?
Not saving an audio file does not remove the need to follow applicable consent rules and organizational policy. Inform participants and confirm the requirements for your meeting before starting.
Where is the transcript stored if there's no recording?
Nod stores transcripts and summaries in the EU and uses hosted inference for transcription. It does not retain a playback recording. See the security policy for provider locations, no-training terms, and fallback retention.

Useful on day one. Hard to work without by month three.

Start free on macOS, no card. Every conversation you capture today is one you can still ask about a year from now.
